The astigmatizer is used for stretching out a bright star or planet horizontally to bisect the bubble. This helps in centering on the bubble and in maintaining vertical at night. Dim stars, Sun, and Moon don't seem to benefit.

As a mentally ill service connected veteran suffering with MST and PTSD I know too much about stigmatization and I am wondering what benefit there is in it.

That said, page 17 of the current 2013 Celestaire catalog shows two aviation type sextants that they offer for sale at a somewhat reasonable (as far as the price of sextants go.) One is the Navy Mark V (AN 5851-1) going for: $900 with Averager.

The other is the A-12 (Link) and is described as a pre-WWII sextant manufactured by the Link Aviation co. It was used by the military and airlines until the mid-1940's and was the last of the line made for use in open cockpit aviation.
