Hi Dan,
maybe it's an Australian thing but on any Saturday at our small yacht club I would see friends and others who have circumnavigated. We probably have 4 or 5 boats that have circumnavigated with a few more on their way now. We regularly sail in company with one boat and crew that have circumnavigated. In addition we have other friends further afield who have done the same.
Is this an antipodean thing? I'd be interested in other comments.
Peter - thanks for Berrimilla's story. What a PITA that Customs made them trudge up the river to Hobart rather than letting them re-provision at Bruny. Hobart doesn't lend itself as a port of entry for that reason - you either have to come up the Channel or up Storm Bay then up the river. Melbourne is similarly a pain. Eden I reckon is the best shot in this corner of the country.
Interestingly I recently heard Peter Joubert speaking about his 1998 Hobart experience and showing pictures. ! As you would know Peter is now well into his 70s and is the designer of the Brolga. In the 1998 Hobart he was in a 43 footer of his own design and they suffered a knockdown in horrendous seas. He lost a crew member overboard and by a very lucky chance that person was picked up by the police helicopter in a very brave rescue.
Regards
Mike

Peter: you are lucky to know these people. How many of us have ever
even met somebody who has circumnavigated the globe?
Merry Christmas!
Dan
