Thanks to all who replied with suggestions. Since I got two votes for Araldite Ultra Clear, I shall go for it.
Incidentally, I noticed only now when searching for all answers that the same question had already been posted and answered here in 2004. (Surprise, surprise!) The recommendation given back then was to use Super Glue. But I have had not so good an experience with that and so I am glad I asked again.
