    Re: Beware of your GPS!

"The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house."

Ha! A likely story. Imagine how difficult life was for such devious criminal
geniuses before the invention of GPS. They had to look up addresses in phone
books, convert those to latitude and longitude using a paper atlas, and then
use their sextants to travel by the stars to reach the homes of their
    intended victims.

Speaking of GPS, last month my cell phone pulled a fast one on me. It's a very
entertaining touch phone smartphone which I bought in December of 2007 (much
cheaper than an iphone at that time). At the time, I knew that it was a
better deal than a few similar phones because it did not include built-in
GPS. Fine with me. I'll use my sextant ;-).

In the summer of 2008, new software was released for the phone. It required a
hard re-boot wiping out phone numbers, photos etc, and therefore requiring
some back up work. So I put it off... until last month. I loaded up the new
software and discovered it added some nice new software features. Very cool.
Then I went into Google Maps to look up a restaurant, and I saw the message
"Seeking satellites..." Yeah, right, I thought. About ten seconds later, the
map re-formed and dropped a little dot on the map about ten feet from where I
was standing. Turns out it had GPS all the time. I've been GPS'd!

Since then I have had great fun with GPS smartphone. It gives me something to
look at while I'm driving down the road (ok, when I'm stopped at stop
lights). It's fascinating to see the position fly a hundred yards away or
more when I'm in the urban canyons of downtown Chicago.
