    Those 'surprising legs' can also be found on most surveyor's sextants. 
    The surveyor's sextants have an additional handle that screws into the 
    normal handle perpendicularly and makes it easier to take horizontal 
    angles. With the additional handle in place it is not possible to lay 
    down the instrument in a normal way (e.g. with the handle down) and that 
    is why the additional set of legs was introduced. The Observator I own 
    even has one of these legs right in front of the telescope, which is
