    Bobby Schenk's Golden Sextant
    From: Luc Van den Borre
    Date: 2020 Aug 3, 16:40 +0200

Frank's recent post reminded me of another golden sextant. This one is
golden in more than just the obvious way!

Bobby Schenk is a sailor and sailing writer well known in Germany. Some
time in the '80s Aßkamp (or Asskamp) released a version of one of their
    sextants endorsed by him.

They sent him a 'golden' version. Here's the accompanying letter
    (forgive me, machine translated):

    ===============================================
Nautical instruments - R. Aßkamp KC

    Lat 53º 31 N, Long 8º 35.5 E.

    September 9, 1985

I'm glad that we got your sextant ready.

So far the device has come very well, the errors are a maximum of two
(!) Arc seconds, that fills us all with satisfaction and pride. From my
own 25 years of experience in handling and building sextants, I would
like to say that not one of ten thousand sextants can have these values.

The following can be said about the development of this device: the
frame was cast in September 1984 by the Reitzammer company in Fürth, as
were the mirror frames and the frame for the telescope.

The mirrors were manufactured by the Leybold Hereaus company in Hanau,
the optics of the telescope came from the Erdmann company in
Greifenstein. The shadow glasses are from Schott, they were cut by the
Möller company in Wedel. The sextant parts themselves were manufactured
under the guidance of our plant manager, Mr. Gerwin, the alidade
warehouse and the bearing of the drum screws were ground in personally
by Mr. Gerwin. The final assembly was assembled by the well-known
precision mechanic, Mr. Gerd Ehmke, and Mr. Ehmke later measured the
    finished device.

We wish you a happy journey with this device at all times and always a
hand's breadth of water under the keel.

    Rüdiger Aßkamp

Later on Aßkamp sold themselves to Cassens & Plath and Dr. Udo Aßkamp
became CEO. They still market a 'Bobby Schenk' sextant, with full-view
    mirror.

P.S. Funny thing though, Aßkamp used to be called 'CP Nautische
Instrumente R. Aßkamp', and sold a 'CP' model sextant. Those magic
letters CP were used by many manufacturers...
