With all the talk about Borneo in the news, this information tidbit seemed relevant.
Recently while reading about the Pagan tribes of Borneo, an interesting star "viewing" device was mentioned. See attached pages; page 109 from "The Pagan Tribes of Borneo, volume one" and page 139 from "The Pagan Tribes of Borneo, volume two"
The device is a bamboo tube/vessel filled with water then tilted until a specific star could be viewed. After finding the star they would tilt the tube/vessel back to vertical and read the water level. If level matched the historical mark on the tube/vessel the planting season had arrived.
