I have a much-loved silver-bound lodestone on my desk (pic attached). It is unusual in that it is engraved with a name and date ("G. Denning 1791") under the iron keeper on the top, which based on the quality of the engraving, I suspect was the name of the owner.
While I have read up on the history of the magnetic compass (from gilbert onwards) over the years and of course understand how it was used, etc, it occurred to me that I really know far less about these artifacts than I should.
I was thus hoping someone on this list might point me towards some more specialized articles?
