OK Bill,
I guess I didn't see the church steeple for the stars. I made a lot of earth and star sketches but when my distance from the stars GP was the unknown and I plugged "light years" in for the opposite side it blew up.
Your answer makes a lot of sense when the box sextant is used by a surveyor - which apparently was a common use.
