I asked about the certificate, David, but she did not know. She did say her father was a lawyer and tended to keep documents in separate files. Naturally, I urged her to look for it.
The thing that struck me about #14809 is the horizon mirror. Every C. Plath I've ever seen had a circular one, as does the one on the Robert White site, #14215. Also the scope is a different style.
As to the Made in Germany, the 30s generally and 1936 in particular were "interesting times," and that may have something to do with it.

A nice looking sextant Hewitt with few additional parts. Just out of curiosity, I'm happy with my Hughes, are those four pinholes iside the lid where the arc calibration certificate would have been? Also out of curiosity, is there any significance in "Made in Germany" cut into the arc and not "Hergestellt in Deutschland" or "Plath Hamburg"? Dave
