Mr Peterson, Thank you very much for your comments on the Plath Navistar Professional Sextant. I wonder if I could trouble you for come clarification as follows: Does the adjustment mechanism on the Plath Classic operate the same way as that on the Professional i.e. that you do not need to loosen one adjustment screw before the other is tightened? Also you wrote: The big issue with these mirrors is corrosion of the stainless steel screws in the aluminum mirror housing. Frequently, if you can get the screws out the sockets, the holes require retapping and sometimes the corrosion is too great and must be drilled and tapped oversize for a new, larger screw. My sextants are used exclusively for dry land, mainly desert navigation. Am I likely to have the corrosion problem described? Does the Classic suffer from the corrosion problem as well as the Professional? Does keeping the screws oiled alleviate the problem? One final question: A watchmaker where I buy my sextant oil/grease said that a useful way to remove old grease from clocks is to use Shellite. Do you know if this is satisfactory and safe for sextants?
