Gerard-My understanding is that works produced by the US government *are* all copyright protected. However, the copyright is held (surprise) by the employers of the US government, that is, the People. Of the US. I have no idea if that makes them truly "public domain", or simply free to US citizens. I'd never needed to consider that view until recently, but I make the rash guess that in practice, they are free to all. And despite NIMA's odd feelings about "civilians", that applies expressly to them as well. (NIMA pretends their latest Bowditch PDF may not be legally recopied, because it has their logo appear in it.)
