I once had to go into the Home Office in Croydon, England. I knew I will be
waiting there for a few hours for documents to be prepared, so took with me
one of my slide rules, a 5'' K+E Decilon, to play with. My bag was stopped
at the X-Ray machine and I had to take the slide rule out and provide a long
explanation, although one of the older security guards seems to vaguely know
    what it was.

I never took a sextant on board a commercial flight but passed several times
with various slide rules without any problems.

Several yeares ago, on a return flight from Maine, I had a Davis Mk. 15 with
    me, a carry on piece.

The security peson at check in, a lady, asked what was in the ehite plastic
case. I told her it was "a sextasnt", to which she responsed with a double
take or blank look. When I opened the case for her she said "oh a
navigastional instrument", to which I responsed yes, going on my way,
    without additional question.

So much for my adventures with the air transport of sextants.
