How about sailing in fog in a congested channel. I still remember two occasions which happened 20 or more years ago. Could not see the bow in a 34 ft Sabre……ugh!

PhD candidates in the Netherlands, in addition to dissertation, must prepare a number of concise propositions/statements (in dutch Stellingen ) in a form of attachment.Traditionally part of it does not need to be directly related to the main content of dissertation. The idea behind is that a PhD candidate is able to defend these statements in public if he will be asked for (in practice it never happens).
Here is the 7-th stelling from my PhD thesis (2009):
7. Two things are only whispered when one talks seriously about sailing: celestial navigation and the harshest waters of Cape Horn.
