Thanks Bill, you have confirmed my suspicion that a tube is missing. I purchased the sextant 40+ years ago and and the case has hardly been opened in that time apart from a burglary when as far as I know nothing was taken. I suspect the tube was missing when I obtained the sextant but will never know.
I have determined the following:
E screws onto C & D.
Lens on C unscrews and can be replaced by F.
C has two lenses so is keplerian?
A & B are one lens each.
When I take the lens off C I can see a graticule. This is the first time I have noticed it.
It is dead reckoning weather outside so I probably will not be working on this anymore today (-;
