Someone asked about canoe sterns. Pros and Cons. I have a Southern Cross 39 with a canoe stern. It has a very seakindly motion. The biggest waves I've every had it in is 15 ft and it was perfect. The real problem is very constrained space for a live aboard long distant boat. The lazarette is very small compared to other 39s with square sterns. I find this to be a serious constraint, and I am always looking to improve storage. I do have a Wind vane steering setup, but davits seem very difficult. Swim platform also nearly impossible (open to new ideas on davits and swimming) Canoe stern shortens waterline and reduces hull speed. I have a shorter waterline many other 39s. I'm totally biased, but I think it looks very good. Navigation content: A radar mast works well at the stern and holds various antenna. Boat is very steady and tracks well making compass steering easy.
