Yes, this is really interesting. I have always been interested in tbe stars, so seeing some of the tools that helped people explore the world before the days of the Internet and computers and satellites is great 

The national geographic photo is of Lieutenant Henry Rennick on the expedition, photo taken by Herbert Ponting. Its the only photo I've found so far, but doesn't really help me with identifying my friends one.

He has researched it a bit himself, and says it is a Troughton and Simms twin pillar sextant, and has a serial number of 2365 engraved into it. The R F Scott engraving looks to be silver lettering.

Do you know much about Captain Scott's expedition, or his sextant, or places I could research and find more exact details about his kit? My friend has been in contact with the Captain Scott research institute and looked in Cambridge at some old documents but nothing concrete has turned up.

I thought maybe the photos or numbering the sextant itself might hold a clue.
