I've enjoyed trying to work my way down a shore using the Light List on Lake Michigan. Where there are many harbors in areas like the south west shore, there are so many lights it is a non-trivial task. Of course Chicago serves as a reference point visible for almost 50 miles from a sailboat if the weather permits. On Lake Superior however, one can go for hours in a sailboat at night without seeing any lights at all--except for those on the boat.
