    Thanks. I haven't seen this article before. Just as a "heads-up" for anyone reading this who may not be more familiar with the history of navigation, on the first page, Weems is out of his element. His history of navigation through the year 1900 is a fairly typical re-telling of American navigational "legend" of the history of navigation. It's bad history.

    After c.1915, of course, Weems is writing of his own personal experience, his direct involvement, and his own significant contributions to twentieth century navigation.

    And it's interesting to note that Weems suggests that research should be done on the effect of terrestrial refraction on the dip of the horizon... Sound familiar? Folks have been chasing that goose for two hundred years!
