Alan,
HB 0.7 mm Pentel Ain hi-polymer leads work good for course lines, Lops, and writing. The 0.5 mm will tear the chart but is very good for writing and sight reduction math. 0.9 mm is a hair too fat for my eye but is ok. Anything softer than HB will smudge when erased. The Pentel P207 is my favorite mechanical pencil but it can harpoon a hole in the pocket if you're not careful. Other mechanicals have retracting leads. Lots of choices out there.
