The humble pencil and notepad will hopefully be with humanity for centuries yet, it is near foolproof, at work I have had more than one ballpoint fail when it has been out in -40°C or been subject to some heat (think burning caused by stray spark from forging, welding or cutting metal...).
never been thwarted by a pencil (eccepting needing to replace lead in a mechanical or sharpen a wooden)
I have found them performing even when outside temp was low the plastic (or wood) was charred, they are about only thing I have found works well when paper is damp...
only thing I have found annoying is the tendency for wooden pencil leads to break when stored in a pocket, but as i said above that is easily remedied.
