Thanks for the references you included below. Something else to consider, though it does explain what I believe are the significant differrences I've noticed between checking IE against a sea horizon at the beach, where distance is measureed in miles, as opposed to viewing terrestrial objects, the roof line of a building whose distance would be measured in yards.
If is isn't one thing, it's another, isn't it.
