Jason, I think Nick is right on target with his Casio G-Shock recommendation, though I would suggest one of the 'atomic/solar' models that automatically update time daily based on the NIST atomic signal (UTC-1, I believe) and features a solar battery.  They're tough (effectively water- and shock-proof), utterly reliable, and affordable.  I've had mine over 15 years, in which time it's been rebuilt by Casio once.  It's one of the best products I've ever owned, and I hope to have it the rest of my life.  It also toggles to 'GMT' at a button push and can be set to illuminate automatically by raising one's wrist (something my old Plaths certainly don't do...).  Even if out of range of the NIST atomic signal, the watch features the accuracy Nick mentions.  Far as I'm concerned, it's the perfect navigation timepiece.
