    I have not, so far, used the pan of oil type AH. I have used a Celestair AH, essentially a pan of water, with suitable shades/wind breaks. Morning and afternoon sun shots provide a calculated position that is usually within 2 miles of GPS coordinates, I assume that GPS coordinates are correct. Good enough,I suppose, for "back yard navigation efforts". Shooting from the beach is bette, but the beach is somewhat far removed from my location, curses.
