    Sixty years ago the UK Commercial exams required what was called a DAY'S WORK. this was a D.R calculation using the Traverse Table in the Nautical tables. You could factor in leeway and currents.  It kept us off the rocks in the North Atlantic (Most of the time).  I believe the AQUITANIA crossed the Atlantic from New York heading for Cherbourg with thick fog all the way and got so far up Bantry Bay that she had to back out.   Lotsa luck.nsg

    I always have a paper chart open to use as reference. I also have a
    GPS on with built-in charts (chartplotter). I also use a radar in bad
    weather or at night.
