I believe that you are referring to the Dead Reckoning Tracer, which has always been a secondary system used in CIC(Combat Information Center). While it is useful for plotting the position of a man overboard it is not relied on for a DR position over a long amount of time. It relies on inputs from the gyrocompass and the electromagnetic log but doesn't receive updates from the gps. While it is a very useful tool for plotting the relative position of contacts it is not as accurate or as easy to use as modern ARPAs and electronic charting systems. It is just one more of the systems that is going to disappear as the Navy moves to more modern (and maybe better, or maybe not) systems that simplify the way we do business on the bridge of a warship. -----Original Message----- From: Navigation Mailing List [mailto:NAVIGATION-L@LISTSERV.WEBKAHUNA.COM] On Behalf Of Royer, Doug Sent: Friday, October 17, 2003 14:38 To: NAVIGATION-L@LISTSERV.WEBKAHUNA.COM Subject: Re: DR plotting techniques Stacy, thanks for the info about the websites. That's real good info.By the way,you mentioned you were in the Navy so I figured you guys correct your charts.Do you guys still use the DR plotting(maybe they were called DR positioning)machines.I've seen them(there are pictures of them in the old Dutton books)but don't really know how they work.
