Jared, From your description, it sounds like it was current set that was giving my "error" (in quotes since it apparently wasn't an error, except for the ignorance of the guy trying to figure the machine out). Any info on the accuracy of the bearings? They'd have to be calculated fairly rapidly to give current info. There was a link to a picture posted here not long ago about a boat fetched up on an island off Canada due to the great circle/rhumb line referred to in other posts here. I can imagine that radar could get one into a pickle in the fog without a proper understanding of its workings. Things were a lot easier when one could only use a depth line, magnetic compass and a chart and rules in close on the land, and perhaps a sextant for distance. Surely it was easier to fetch up on the rocks! Fred
