Hanno and Karl,
IMHO both are right. Two sides of the same coin.
- One is a simulation based in a model without navigational data,
- and the other is a probabilistic treatment of the navigational problem.
Like in FEM, the model must be validate against real observed data.
For the second way, the confidence ellipse is obtained using the covariance matrix of the system of equations.
