Re: Dating Caesar's first incursion to Britain

Caesar's prose comes across to me as beautifully concise, clear, and
    well
expressed; a superb piece of reportage; though careful to show himself
    in a
    good light.

Forty five and more years ago, when I was required to translate some
large chunks of Caesar, it did not occur to me that his style was at
all clear... But my wife, who was a classicist, say that his style was
thought to be very straightforward narrative, without flourishes, and
for that reason was often selected for beginners to struggle with.
Looking at the Latin alongside a fairly literal translation by W A
MacDevitt I am left uneasy about the researchers conclusions, since
they seem to be based on somewhat shakey premises and assumptions,
some of which George has already pointed out.
