Re: Dating Hughes and Son sextants

The age of Hughes’ sextants has come up before.  Might it be useful to start a list of arc numbers v date of original certificate in the Resources section for the convenience of new purchasers?  Mine is 25410 and the certificate is dated 28th February 1941, so they must have produced quite a lot of them.  Others supplier’s overhaul certificates can also lead to confusion.  The attached link  http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/andrew-smith-and-son/catalogue-id-srandr10010/lot-6ace42ba-0689-4eef-814a-a3f900c5bb4a  shows a sextant advertised recently as a post-war sextant by B Cooke & Son, Hull   when close examination of both the sextant and the writing on the Cooke’s Certificate shows it to be a Hughes three circle Mates sextant. Its number puts it around late 1940.  DaveP
