In the 1915 edition of "The Book of the Sextant" by Arthur Hughes (of Hughes and Sun), there is an illustration of a stop watch attached to the handle of a sextant, and in "My Modern Sextant" by G A Heath, 1937, there is a "dotting watch" illustrated. It is a stop watch with a mechanism to leave an ink dot on the crystal at the time of an observation. One of my Hughes and Son sextants, from 1920, has a small pocket in the frame just below the index arm bearing for a small watch(see attachements).
Perhaps there is nothing new under the sun.
