    Hello everbody,

I'm from Germany and reading NavList messages now for some time, as I've some interest in celestial navigation...

Regarding the degree sign (and other chars not on a regular keyboard):

On Unix systems (as well as on the nowadays more common Linux) the concept of the compose key exists for decades now. The idea is to dedicate a key (older keyboard from SUN or DEC had special keys for that) and use it to create the non existing chars by a more or less intuitive sequence of two keys.

As the is no "compose key" on PC keyboards I usually configure the "windows key" as the compose key.

To get the degree symbol (°) you just enter <Windows Key> + <o> + <o>. Another example would be the EURO Sign (€) with <Compose Key> + <=> + <E>. It works for foreign language characters (like the swedish Ø or german Umlauts Ö)

The concept is much more intuittive than remembering ASCII codes, I guess.

There are several open-source tools to implement the compose concept in Windows...
