  That works for me too. My laptop doesn't have a numeric keypad so I 
have to use NUMLOCK to enter numbers as though from a keypad so, on this 
computer, the sequence NUMLOCK ALT k u 8 produces the degree symbol too, ° .

Interestingly, if I use NUMLOCK ALT and the numbers 2 4 8 on the top row 
of keys I get ◘ but if NUMLOCK is off then nothing is produced.
