FWIW, at least two recent variants of Basic use "sign(x)". They also tend
to use other longer variants like atan(x) and sqrt(x) instead of the older
atn(x) and sqr(x). Not that it makes much difference!
BTW, FWIW(x) is rendered ForWhatItsWorth(x) in recent variants and
BTW(x) is ByTheWay(x). This last sentence, just so there's no confusion, is just
for <g> (where <g> means grins). <g>
