    Alex,

    That makes sense, but I'm still hoping someone will come across actual experiments.

    My argument depends, first, on the idea that the main uncertainty in air density is down close to the water. Second, on the fact that the closer your eye is to a bend in a ray of light, the greater the angular displacement of the thing you're looking at.
