Back in 1999, I sat down and worked out the spherical trig for this problem. It may be found at http://ns.doit.wisc.edu/~mdorl/Sight%20Reduction%20write%20up.doc I am pretty sure it handles all the quadrant problems I did not consider problems at angles when the trig functions misbehave. I've written a cpp program (SIGHTS) to solve this problem using this method and I have done some limited testing. The program can be also found at http://ns.doit.wisc.edu/~mdorl/. That copy is badly out of date; if anyone cares let me know and I'll upload the current version (hard for me because I live in the boonies beyond decent internet access. I haven't looked at but hope to get around to examining at the interesting planes solution.
