    Hi Norm

Is your intelliscope a land based tripod instrument?  How does it "know" vertical?

A theodolite is best in my view for land based.  Precise (1/4 moa or better) measurements.  Vertical index error can be eliminated.

I have a modest Orion 'Intelliscope' meaning that as long as it knows vertical (ah, there's the rub), it will read out both alt and az as well as ra and dec. of any object. The encoders are really cheap, and do 2.3 min (360/9216) resolution.
