Precisely, Crowhurst was a sincere sailor but lacked the practical wherewithal to do it right and without injury to self or others. It is sad that he placed all his hopes upon winning the Golden Globe prize money in order to bail himself out of mounting debt. That was the only reason Crowhurst undertook the race deluding himself that he could win.

Sadly his problems from the start of tangled lines leading aft and the subsequent lack of headway out of the Solent and into the open waters of the Channel doomed and flagged his spirit probably. I am going along the lines of the IFC Documentary -- Deep Water (2006) on the failed Crowhurst journey. This 2017 Film seems to take license with the facts. Crowhurst knew a Sextant, and most have that little notch that prevents the scope from being mounted backwards.

I hope the film 2017 takes into account the underlying aspects of his failed existence, his memory owes as much. A man who should never have gone to sea, but in his deluded mind Crowhurst saw himself as a Drake or even a Nelson. Studio Canal also produced a film on Crowhurst's life entitled The Mercy (2018) according to a Wikipedia article on the Crowhurst film. Never presume to know or see fact in any produced film made to make money, entertain and enrage. Even objective Documentaries like Deep Water take license.

Just my take on the sad man's ordeal.
