    Don't do this to a sextant

    The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California has been extensively renovated and expanded in the past few years. I believe it's re-opening this month. They have kept the original 1930s wall murals including one that symbolically shows the influence of modern scientific celestial navigation (modern, as of 1934). In the mural, a female figure, supposedly a Goddess of Calm, is shown holding a sextant. Here she is:
     
     
    I'll say this: I would not be particularly "calm" if anyone picked up one of my sextants by the index mirror!
     
    And then there's an item for sale on ebay:
    I don't mind so much that someone has turned an old sextant into a lamp. It's better than using it as a hammer, I suppose. But look at the position of the index shades. Ouch. :-)
