I notice antique octants with dual, side-by-side, sight holes. A good example is on

Also on eBay now is an example listed under "Rare 19th century early French navigation sextant".
What is the reason for the dual sight holes?
I can understand that moving a telescope can vary the relative amount of light from a star or the horizon but I’d think that your eye would not be influenced by the location of the sight hole across the split mirror.
