Efforts to refloat the stranded Pasha Bulker in Newcastle continue, after an attempt on Thursday night's king tide (of only about 1.9 metres; we don't have much of a tidal range here). Cables from sea anchors were attached to onboard winches, and a number of tugs also took up the strain. Two cables snapped but the ship was moved, mainly by pivoting on its axis by about 9 degrees. We awoke to television images of the ship surging to and fro in the swell. Sea water ballast was pumped onboard to stabilise the ship while another attempt was prepared, expected for tonight's high tide. Earlier planned ventures had to be postponed due to the continuing strong winds and high seas. Unfortunately, the ship shows signs of deterioration in its hull integrity. There are vertical folds apparent towards the middle of the hull, as if it was trying to bend in half. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/06/25/1960555.htm (nice photo here) http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/06/19/1955360.htm (here too; from above) http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/saving-the-pasha-bulker/2007/06/28/1182624044139.html (another good pic) http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21993271-421,00.html http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21993371-29277,00.html http://media.smh.com.au/?rid=29108 (on this site you can watch the scene live) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To post to this group, send email to NavList@fer3.com To , send email to NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
