    Encounters with H2o spouts
    From: Doug Royer
    Date: 2003 Sep 18, 12:05 -0700

I don't know the science behind the H2o spouts but will tell you my
encounters with them.Hopefully some of you can enlighten me on what makes
them what they are.Spouts are not like tornadoes when away from a land
mass. When occureing around a land mass I've noticed they act like tornadoes
because I've been around a couple in the mid west.
I'll start by discribeing a near coastal spout I observed at around 3 miles
distance according to the radar. It formed quickly from the bottom of some
Cumulus clouds. The clouds began to vortex and start toward the surface of
the water. The visible part of the spout stayed close to the clouds and not
untill the vortex touched the water could any more of the spout be
seen. After the spout was touching the surface for a time I could actually
see the water being lifted and expelled from the column of air while the top
part of the spout that was visible earlier decended to meet the water being
drawn up.The closest it got to the vessel was 1.75 miles and you could hear
it distictly. On the radar it looks like a rain squal only it was moveing
faster and very irratically. The barometer stayed fairly steady throughout
but the wind direction changed radically but stayed in the same relative
position throughout. From start to stop 4-6 minutes elapsed.
On most mid-ocean spouts I've witnessed they appear and look as do desert
zephyrs. The column of air is not visible at all untill it touches the
water.Water rises up in the column and then just peters out. Most appear to
be 10-50 ft. in diameter. They are not threatening to large vessels. They
dance around for a time and disappear as fast as they form.Sometimes the
creast falls away from where the spout touches and the uptake of water is
stopped for a few secounds untill the spout again finds the surface.I did
witness one monster at an unknown distance in mid ocean that looked like an
hour glass.I have noticed there is no predictable rotation of the winds in
the air column in the both hemispheres as have cyclones or hurricanes. Also,
the barometer stays relatively stable during encounters.
Mike,I looked at the problem on the site you gave but didn't go further with
it because I didn't see a date associated with the sight.Did I miss the
    date?
