I've long been curious to discover just how close one could come with
the super-basic method of advancing arcs or circles position at the
standard Universal Plotting Sheet scale, which is why I was glad to be
presented with Jeremy's example from a CG exam.

    Thanks again,

    Hewitt

    Hewitt,

If you look through my navigation notebook from the TS TEXAS CLIPPER, there are at least 2 high-altitude sun sights.  Unfortunately at that time, I did not know about the methods of taking 2 shots a few minutes apart and didn't do intersecting circles.  If my memory serves me, the Z-distance was about 10 nm, which actually was quite a hindrance to try and get position better then that.

Andres "cheated" a bit with the problem as he used a computer which certainly wouldn't be allowed in the exam room, but it does show how the circles work when reduced at sea.  I haven't had the chance to shoot any high altitude sun sights lately, but I will be mindful when I am at sea and will try to get some if it is possible.

    Jeremy
