Exercise #8 Local Apparent Moon (LAM) aka Meridian Transit of the Moon When I was in school a friend and I shot Meridian Passage of the Moon at high altitudes (HO was 89deg 50+ minutes!) giving us equal altitude circles to play with. We referred to it as Local Apparent Moon, or LAM. If you dont like the name, dont use it. I like it though. This sight isnt so dramatic (when I get home I will try to dig out the High altitude sight), but is a good example of Latitude by moon sight. Unlike the sun, the moons time of transit must be carefully recorded in order to fine tune the Declination as it changes very rapidly, and especially so near the equinoxes. At 21h 00m 48s UTC on 28 May 2008, the upper limb of the Moon was observed at meridian transit. IE was 0.0, T/P was 84 F and 1010 mb, height of eye was 106 feet. The DR latitude was 14deg 40 North. Sextant altitude was 72deg 25.8 Determine Latitude by LAM. My solution to follow.
