I am out of my depth standing in a water puddle in a parking lot when it comes to lapse rates etc. Half my observations over the past five years have been taken from a light or medium displacement sailboat on the lake, which given my abilities are less precise and accurate than AH or shore observations--until now. I did mention to Alex off list I wish we could have made observations five miles off shore and see how they compared. I have seem some extremely strange conditions from shore and near shore, but nothing like this offshore. Even with a horrible horizon offshore, I can usually get intercepts within 5' to 7' of the GPS position (even with my first DIY cardboard sextant), which realistically is adequate to make ones away across an ocean, but not good feedback for techniques--nor a confidence builder. Again, I plaudit Alex for using many wretched horizons yet obtaining usable ocean intercepts, and pursuing answers to what he could not fathom as possible like a pit bull with mailman's leg in his jaws ;-) Bill B
