Dear Geoffrey, Your experience is really very interesting. A true macular 'hole' by solar radiation is quite spectacular and unmissable; as are laser 'spots' which do the same thing. Yours is indeed an unusual case. If there is no disturbance or pathology of the macular physical structure this is very good news. There are various possibilities but would be speculation only. The fact it is recovering slowly is very good. To be uncomfortable picking up a sextant though would be a tragedy for someone who enjoys the mental challenge and fun of it. Do get the sextant out again - the risks are negligable when correct shades are used. I do not want to overstate the case. My concern was only with the apparent suggestion by some that looking at a low Sun with a telescope without proper shades, hence without protection from I/R or UV, is somehow Ok. It is not. I would have been negligent in not mentioning it having read it. It is my job. Douglas Denny. Chichester.
