Well, I changed my email address so I had to re-up on list.I wished to respond to this thread so I'm forwarding it. Subject: RE: On whinging and moaning Date: Mon, 4 Apr 2005 16:15:41 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 charset="iso-8859-1" "it is a stage for querulous old men to strut their egos while exposing their erudition" Well, it doesn't need much textual analysis to deduce that it's me he is attacking: and not for the first time. I can't answer for who was Peter's target,if any. What I do know is this site can be intimadating to new members. It was intimadating to me when I 1st came on and since then I have had more than 1 private message from younger(newer)members. Some of those members no longer post online because of the intimadation factor or their veiwing of topics.Perhaps they view topics discussed here as mundaine or only want to go into a topic so far. Some of what is discussed here can get abstract. A case in point: some of my posts have no relation to "navigation" topics as the list is set up for.I post my perspectives on a subject or raise a new subject. If someone is interested in persueing the topic we write back and forth untill satisfied. That way the whole list isn't subjected to a topic that only interests a few. My "Mixter's and radar" thread is a great example of this.1 online post and about 2 dozen offlist inquiries and answers. I greatly respect George and all on this list for the in dept discussions on subjects. There are personalities on onlist that ruffle my feathers at times just like I know I do to them. But through all that I've increased my understanding of things by getting past that and reading what is written. Frank, about a year ago, wrote an excellant paper dealing with his procedure of calculating/shooting star to star angles.I use that procedure from time to time.Frank is one that can ruffle my feathers. But I looked past that and gained something. Just a short time ago someone wrote of useing a gps for(I believe)sight reduction. When I 1st read it I thought "well, interesting but I don't see how because my gps unit isn't set up that way.But at least this guy is thinking."After reading the responces I started to really think about what he wrote.I printed all of it and will get to it when I've got time to see if it really does work as stated. When I check my mail every couple of days I look through what was sent to the list, delete subjects I'm not interested in offhand and then open any that I think may interest me.Sometimes later I may go back to the archives and sample a few of those subjects to see if I have an interest.Sometimes I do,sometimes I don't. The subject of LUNARS gets deleted offhand.I have no interest. For every person who leaves the list(for any reason)we all lose something.Everyone here has worth. Just my thoughts.
