Is this the correct use of the ellipse. I selected a point on the ellipse that is closest to the LOP then start a DR from that point forward then repeated. The ellipse would be the maximum error expected for the DR of the vessel underway. Have I interpreted this correctly ?

Greg,
The attached PDF shows the error ellipses. But I use them for discussion only. From prior knowledge we know they're there, but we know little about them, and certainly not their probability structure because we've not taken statistical data under the existing navigation conditions.
BTW, that's unlike sextant altitude measurements where many of us know our expected 1D distribution from many measurements.
