Are you sure about those coordinates? The Miami sectional chart shows no
shipwreck there, and the point is more than 30 NM from Great Isaac Island.

Descriptions I've seen on the Web say the Sapona is between South Bimimi
and Cat Cay. The sectional shows a wreck in that area, at N25°39'

No, I made a typo. I meant to type 25° 39' N so you have the correct coordinates for the ship.

It doesn't fit at all. I had assumed the wreck depicted on the sectional
chart at N26°00' W079°08' (about 4 NM SW of Great Isaac Island) was the
Sapona. But everything I've seen on the Web puts Sapona in the Bimimis.

The course to the Sapona is 118 ° T.

I'm beginning to suspect the Sapona is another error which has
propagated down through the years. How did that ship get into the story?
Web pages that appear to draw directly from the Navy report don't
mention it. They merely say Flight 19 was supposed to practice bombing
    at Hen and Chickens Shoals.

That is the same conclusion I had come to.

The link you posted went to a site that discussed the use of the plotting board.
on that flight. I have posted a complete illustration of the flight on a plotting board at:

But there is yet another mystery. The planes were supposed to have
practiced bombing on a ship wreck. That wreck is the ship Sapono. The
problem is that the Sapona is 25.6 NM SSW of Great Issacs, I know
    because I have dived upon it. Its location is 25º 30.1' N, 79º 17.6' W'.
I am attaching a photo from Google Earth of the ship.

I never saw your original message because of that attachment. One of my
email filters automatically routes any message with an attachment to the
    trash folder.
