Before I get to your message about quahogs, I wanted to mention that you are 
responsible for one of the few improvements that I've added over the past few 
years to that method for finding longitude with sights around noon. I 
proposed calculating the detailed correction for each sight individually: if 
the vessel's N/S speed component is six knots towards the Sun then a sight 
which is thirty minutes after the first would be adjusted down by three 
minutes of arc, etc. You made the good suggestion of drawing a line above the 
initial parabolic data where the slope in minutes of arc per hour is equal to 
the speed (N/S component) in minutes of arc per hour. Then just read up the 
graph from each sight and pick off the correction with a pair of dividers (or 
a slip of paper). Very efficient and easy to teach!

The Navy was big in New England back then. One of my childhood memories 
(c.1972) is of an air show at Quonset Point NAS when Bill Fornoff lost his 
life when his F8F Bearcat broke up as he was coming out of a steep dive. I 
remember his son, who flew a matching aircraft, spiralling around the plume 
of smoke from the crash site --which he surely knew was unsurvivable.

And you concluded:
